In February 1904, fire companies from Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York raced to help fight the Great Baltimore Fire — and stood by helpless because their hose couplings didn't fit Baltimore's hydrants. The blaze burned for more than 30 hours and destroyed over 1,500 buildings, and it's the reason the fire service adopted National Standard Thread a year later (NIST). Over a century later, thread mismatches between mutual-aid departments, private hydrants, and older municipal systems still happen — which is exactly why a good set of hydrant adapters belongs on every engine.
Here's a straight answer to the question we get most from departments: which adapter do you actually need, and why.
What a fire hydrant adapter actually does
A hydrant adapter changes the thread type, thread size, or coupling style at a hydrant outlet or hose end so two otherwise incompatible fittings can connect. You'll reach for one any time:
- Your engine responds mutual aid into a department with different hydrant threads
- A private or industrial hydrant uses non-standard threads
- You need to step a large-diameter supply line down to a smaller attack line (or the reverse)
- You're connecting to a Storz-style quick-connect outlet with standard-thread hose
NST/NH threads: the U.S. standard, but not the only thread out there
Most U.S. departments run National Standard Thread — also called National Hose (NH) or National Hose Thread (NHT). NST is a straight thread, meaning it doesn't taper like pipe thread; the gasket in the female coupling creates the seal, and the threads just hold the two fittings together tight. The two sizes you'll see on virtually every standard hydrant are the 2.5" outlets and the 4.5" (or 4") steamer/pumper connection.
The catch: not every hydrant in the country is on NST. Some older municipal systems, private industrial sites, and a handful of major cities still run legacy or manufacturer-specific threads, which is exactly the scenario that made the 1904 Baltimore fire so costly. If your first-due area borders another department, or you run mutual aid regularly, keep a labeled hydrant adapter kit on the rig — not just in the station.
Storz vs. NST: quick-connect vs. screw-thread
Storz couplings are sometimes called "sexless" couplings because two identical Storz ends connect to each other directly — no male/female threading. You seat the lugs, give a quarter turn, and it locks; a quarter turn back releases it. That speed is why Storz has become the standard on large-diameter supply hose (LDH) in a lot of departments, especially at the hydrant end.
A Storz-to-NST adapter lets a Storz-equipped LDH line connect to a standard-thread hydrant outlet, or lets a standard-thread hose connect to a Storz hydrant valve — a very common combination on modern engines that still respond into older neighborhoods.

How to choose the right adapter for your rig
- Match your hydrant, not just your hose. Know the thread standard on every hydrant in your first-due area, and confirm the threads at any mutual-aid or industrial site you cover before you need water fast.
- Carry both directions. A reducer without a matching increaser only solves half your problems — most departments stock adapter sets that cover 2.5"–4.5" in both directions.
- Check for a locking mechanism on Storz fittings 3" and larger. NFPA requires it, and it's what keeps a charged LDH line from popping loose under pressure.
- Buy brass or hard-coat aluminum, not painted pot metal. Hydrant adapters get dropped on concrete, cross-threaded in the dark, and left wet in a compartment — cheap castings strip and seize.
- Keep them where you'll actually reach them. A dedicated hydrant bag on the officer's side of the rig beats digging through a compartment when the pump operator is already charging the line.
Maintenance takes five minutes and saves a bad call
Inspect gaskets every check — a cracked or missing gasket is the most common reason an adapter leaks under pressure. Back off the swivel to confirm it still turns freely, and hydrant-thread lube (not grease) keeps threads from galling. Rinse adapters after any run near salt water, dirt, or road grit before they go back in the bag.
